Maranatha High School Soars High with Mary Poppins

Holly Campbell

Over the last several years, many have noted the exceptional collegiate quality of Maranatha High School’s performing arts shows. According to senior Holly Campbell, who plays the role of Mary Poppins next week, this particular show is even more extraordinary because of the “flying, huge musical numbers, dancing, magic, and memorable characters.”

Holly explains, “Mary Poppins is a musical about a family with rebellious children and parents whose priorities are placed in things like work and parties rather than their family. Mary Poppins magically appears and becomes their new nanny taking the children on magical adventures, and teaching them life lessons that lead to the restoration of their family.” Holly reflects, “I can see myself in Mary Poppins’ optimism. She is always giving the children hope for their future.”

Holly continued, “This show is such a huge undertaking but MHS Theatre Director, Mr. Blessinger, MHS Music Director, Mr. Rupp, and MHS Dance Director Mrs. Gradwohl are incredibly talented at what they do. Every rehearsal is so much fun because of the great friendships that have evolved and strengthen through this show. It has been so much fun putting this show together with this amazing cast. The cast has been eating and sleeping Mary Poppins. After rehearsal 5 days a week, I still go home and practice the dances, songs, and lines.”

“I have been involved with theater since I was in Kindergarten, and I started voice lessons in eighth grade. My favorite area of performing art is singing because I love the way you are able to express your emotions through words and melodies. Singing is also one of the ways I am able to connect to God and praise him for what He has done in my life. I can see God’s hand in so much that I have been able to do with my voice. I am very excited to be going to Azusa Pacific University next year and majoring in vocal performance and opera. After college I am planning on performing and becoming a voice teacher,” said Holly.

Maranatha Performing Arts is proud to bring Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s instant classic to the Ambassador starting next Thursday, March 10 at 7:00 p.m. each night and running through Saturday, March 12, with an additional 2:00 p.m. matinee on Saturday.
