Maranatha Junior Advances in the Rotary Four Way Test Speech Tournament

(L to R): Jessica Tilney ’21, Joel Turk ’20, and Maranatha Speech and Debate Advisor Pat Mesisca

On Wednesday, March 11 Maranatha High School senior Joel Turk and junior Jessica Tilney competed against San Marino High School and John Muir High School Speech and Debate students in the third round of the annual Rotary Club’s Four Way Speech Tournament at the University Club on the campus of Fuller Seminary in Pasadena. The theme of the Rotary Speech Tournament is “Rotary Connects the World.” Joel spoke about how the Rotary is connected to the world through service with our hands and Jessica spoke about how love unites the world together. In the end, Jessica advanced to the fourth level of the Rotary Speech Tournament.

The Rotary is an annual scholarship tournament where students write a 6-8 minute speech integrating the annual theme with the Rotary four way test: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Maranatha represents the Pasadena area as the tournament now advances to the greater San Gabriel area and eventually to the finals searching for the best Rotary speech in Southern California.
