Maranatha Speech & Debate Wins at Annual Icebreaker Tournament

(L to R): Ryan Lin and his brother Kyran Lin

On Saturday, September 11, the Maranatha Speech and Debate Team competed at the annual Gabrielino Icebreaker Tournament.

The tournament featured 140 students, paired in groups of two. All of the events held throughout the day were improvisational. Round 1 was Improvisational Duo, Round 2 was SPAR – Spontaneous Argument Debates, and Round 3 was Character Debates – a fusion of SPAR Debate and improvisational acting. Students have been working in class for the first month of the school year to prepare for the Icebreaker Tournament.

In the end, Maranatha was victorious, as Ryan Lin (senior) and his brother Kyran Lin (freshman) won the fifth place trophy. Only the top six teams were recognized with trophies and the Lin brothers were one of those teams.

Maranatha Speech and Debate Coach Mr. Mesisca ‘92 said, “It was fun to return to a live Speech and Debate event after a year of seeing students compete online only. I believe this is just the beginning of another highly successful year for our Speech and Debate program.”
