Maranatha Student Team has Strong Showing at Amazon AI Competition

A team of Maranatha High School students did very well in Amazon’s AI (Artificial Intelligence) competition.

With the coaching and support from MHS teacher Dr. Ted Yu, and volunteer parent coach Jacky Chen, the team had a great experience and was recognized for their success in the Amazon Global League of AI Racing Car Competition.

Senior Timothy Chen got into the Top 16 of the Global League, and won #10 in the Amazon Monthly Finale (in the month of November).

Seniors Timothy Chen, Lee Li, James Wang, and Evan Ng all placed in the Top 10% in the Amazon Open league and made it into the Amazon Pro League.

Amazon AWS DeepRacer League is the world’s first global autonomous racing league, driven by machine learning (ML). Developers of all skill levels can compete in races online, and in-person worldwide, to win prizes while improving their AI/ML skills. Over 150,000 IT developers participated in AWS DeepRacer in 2022, from over 160 countries around the globe.

Amazon also has an AWS DeepRacer Student League, which allows high school and college-enrolled students around the globe to develop their ML skills in a fun, hands-on autonomous racing league. Any student, age 16 or older, can leverage 20 hours of ML educational material and 10 hours of monthly model training compute resources to up-level ML skills for free. Students can put their new found skills to the test for their chance to win prizes (such as scholarships, devices, and experiences) by becoming one of the top racers in the Amazon global student league.

The team wishes to thank the Maranatha Science Department, Principal Mr. Newkirk, and faculty Mr. Morales for providing training facilities at school for them to practice!
