Marshall 8th Grade Student Santiago Smith-Ruiz: Volunteering at Hahamongna Native Plant Nursery

Marshall Fundamental Class of 2027, 8th Grade Student Santiago Smith-Ruiz spent time volunteering at Hahamongna Nursery. Santiago tells his story.

“One Saturday morning, my dad and I walked into the Hahamongna Native Plant Nursery to see if we could volunteer to do whatever they needed help with. We knew we wanted to be outside, use our hands, and possibly learn a little about planting and gardening. The volunteer coordinator was very welcoming and invited us to come back the next morning. Over the next few weeks, we volunteered for 12 hours, got our hands dirty, learned about plant propagation, harvested seeds, and got to take some of our work like Salvia clevelandii (Cleveland Sage) Peritoma arborea (Bladder Pods) home with us. Plus, there were a couple other volunteers there to talk with and help pass the time. It was work, but it was fun too. They had all the tools and materials, so all I had to do was show up!”

Hahamongna Native Plant Nursery is a Native Plant Propagation Nursery that is run by community volunteers. It is open to the public on weekends from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. If you would like to schedule an appointment or learn about volunteer opportunities, contact:
