Mayfield Junior School: “Shrek, the Musical: We are All Believers”

The Class of 2017 enthusiastically invited the MJS community to “let their freak flag fly” in four performances of “Shrek, the Musical” March 31-April 2. Strong vocals, focused characterization, great comedic timing and a few stand out performances showcased the unique talents, collaboration skills and commitment of this class.

Irreverent, but authentic, this story was chosen to connect with the social justice theme the class has experienced in their service learning curriculum. Whether serving the homeless at the St. Francis Center or understanding the struggles and hardship faced by immigrants and refugees, the class has learned that, just like the fairy tale creatures in this show, these are people who have been forced from their homes and are in search of kindness. Kindness everyone can all give through acceptance and understanding differences.

The 8th grade play has been a tradition at MJS for over 35 years and highlights the performance and public speaking skills students develop starting in kindergarten. Each year it is both a creative opportunity and a bonding experience for the 8th graders.
