Mayfield Junior School’s 8th Graders’ The Spirit of Giving

Mayfield School’s 8th graders hosted the 2014 Reach Out Assembly on Wednesday, May 28. It was an emotional and uplifting experience for all who attended. The students presenting shared stories and spoke with gratitude about the organizations receiving donations from their yearlong Reach Out efforts, and the people in their lives (many of whom were present) who inspired them. The class had raised the money through multiple events and activities such as the Harvest Festival, Student Council snack bars, and ticket sales to the 8th grade play, Bugsy Malone, Jr. and in the spring began researching organizations, causes and foundations to receive the donations. Throughout the year’s activities and responsibilities, the class learned a little bit about themselves and that every one can make a difference. Each one of the organizations selected had special significance to a member of the class. Children’s Hospital, The Joyful Foundation, American Heart Association, Holy Child Africa, Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, Phase One Cancer Research and many others had all made a difference in the MJS community. The Class of 2014 was happy to give back.
