Monterey Hills School Principals For A Day Share Cultural Experiences with Students

The MHS PTA held its first silent auction this school year. One of the items up for bid was the chance to serve as principal for a day, and three lucky winners won the opportunity to serve.

Along with the usual activities (discussing what they like about the school and what they might want to change, sharing lunch with the principal, and taking a tour of the new school building) the “principals” were also tasked with presenting at the MHS Weekly Cultural Video Assembly. During the school’s acknowledgement of Asian American Pacific Islander Month each of the “principals” read a storybook.

Mr. Wang, kindergartener, read in English and Taiwanese a story written about a young Taiwanese-American who is visiting her Amah Faraway (grandma) for the first time after COVID. Mr.Khan, 2nd grader, shared with students how he celebrated Ramadan and then read Night of the Moon, A Muslim Holiday Story, and Miss Musick, 4th grader, read a story of The Paper Kingdom about the parents of a young Korean boy. She then shared her grandparent’s immigrant experience.

Principal Dr. Narro shared how impressed she was with these young leaders. She said, “The ‘principals’ were confident, had great opinions, and made great connections to the books they read. I hope one day they all actually become principals!”
