Oasis Trilingual Community School Announces Summer School



Oasis Trilingual Community School’s (OTCS) offers a challenging and engaging curriculum in Mandarin, Spanish and English that’s so much fun, students don’t realize how much they’re learning! Our rigorous, balanced, inquiry-based program excites students with a thematically-connected curriculum in all three languages. We focus on building cultural and language perspectives in order to nurture and develop the leaders of tomorrow.

Session 1: June 15—July 2

Class 1: 9:00 a.m.—9:50 a.m.
• (Mandarin) Language and Singapore Math for grades K-2: Language activities, songs, and math games
• (Spanish) Storybook for grades 2-6: Bookmaking based on Spanish fables and legends
• (English) Writing and Photography for grades 2-6: Students write creative stories based on their photos

Class 2: 9:55 a.m.—10:45 a.m.
• (Mandarin) Math & Logic for grades 3–6: Singapore Math, Chinese Abacus and Chess Playing
• (Spanish) Adventures for grades K–6: Explore Latin America through songs, crafts, games and cooking
• (English) Sherlock Holmes for Young Kids for grades K-3: Students read, write and solve exciting whodunit mysteries

Class 3: 10:50 a.m.—11:40 a.m.
• (Mandarin) Idioms for grades 2–6: Classic Chinese Legends, and Mandarin Keyboarding
• (Bilingual Spanish/English) Acting for grades K–6: Monologues and Scene Study Workshop in both Spanish and English featuring Meisner, Stanislavski and Spolin acting techniques
• (English) STEM Zoology for grades K–3: Students get up close and personal with live mammals and reptiles! They will learn about habitats, anatomy, life cycle, and create a 3-D animal cell model

Lunch/Recess: 11:40 a.m.—12:20 p.m.

Class 4: 12:20 p.m.— 1:10 p.m.
• (Mandarin) Gardening and Cooking for grades K–6: Planting, Nutrition, Regional Chinese Cooking, and Making a Mandarin Cookbook
• (English) Mini Medical School for grades 2–6: Students learn CPR and first aid training, human anatomy, DNA, how to study X-rays, and they even perform a mock surgery (Note: Students will be trained and ready to take their AHA CPR test by the end of class.p.m.Class 5: 1:15 p.m. —2:05 PM
• (Bilingual Mandarin/English) STEM Robotics for grades K–3: Build and program a modular robot to follow your commands!

Class 6: 2:10 p.m.—3:00 p.m.
• (Mandarin) Art & Calligraphy for grades K–6: Calligraphy, Art, and Traditional Chinese Bookmaking
• (English) Musical Theater for grades K–6: Singing, Dancing, Drama, Directing, Stagecraft, Prop Making, and Performance!

Session 2: July 6—July 24

Class 1: 9:00 a.m.—9:50 a.m.
• (English) Superheroes for grades K–2: Learn the origins of superheroes from Greek mythology to the present, and write your own hero story
• (Spanish) Culture for grades K–6: Mexican Dancing, Art, Gardening, Regional Latin Cooking, and Making a
Spanish Cookbook
• (Mandarin) Speaking Skills for grades 2–6: Interview Mandarin community members, learn public speaking, poetry recitation, and have Skype conversations with friends in China

Class 2: 9:55 a.m.—10:45 a.m.
• (Mandarin) Math and Logic for grades K-2: Singapore Math, Chinese Abacus and Chess
• (Spanish) Civilization for grades 2-6: Mayan and Aztec Architecture, Pyramid Building, and Culture
• (English) Shakespeare Intro for grades 2-6: Learn about the Bard’s life, plays, history, theater and playwriting.

Class 3: 10:50 a.m.—11:40 a.m.
• (Bilingual Mandarin/English) Start Up! for grades 3–6: Work with a team to develop and design a brand, brainstorm solutions, develop a professional looking pitch, and then pitch to real investors in both Mandarin and English languages.
• (English) CSI Kid Detectives for grades K–3: Learn how detectives gather evidence. Using fingerprinting, shoe-print casting, and other investigative techniques, students will learn about the chemistry, physics and psychology used to solve crimes.

Class 4: 12:20 p.m.—1:10 p.m.
• (Mandarin) Gardening and Cooking for grades K-6: Planting, Nutrition, Regional Chinese Cooking and Making a Mandarin Cookbook
• (English) Kid’s Court for grades 2-6: Build a legal case in a mock trial, learn about evidence, witness testimony, the roles of judges, attorneys and juries, how to build arguments, use legal lingo and debate. Students argue a case and reach a verdict

Class 5: 1:15 p.m.—2:05 p.m.
• (Bilingual Mandarin/English) STEM Robotics for grades 3–6: Build and program a modular robot to follow commands!
• (English) Musicianship and Theory for grades K–6: Students learn different genres of music: including folk, jazz, pop, rock and techno fusion. Plus choral group singing, music theory and reading, and how to play a song on the guitar

Class 6: 2:10 p.m.—3:00 p.m.
• (Bilingual Mandarin/English) Acting for grades K–6: Monologues and scene study workshop in both Mandarin and English featuring Meisner, Stanislavski and Spolin acting techniques
