Pasadena City College’s Math Academy Offers Free Non-Credit Courses for Middle School Students

Pasadena City College’s Math Academy is offering a range of free non-credit math courses for middle school students aimed at boosting math proficiency and confidence.

The program begins on June 24, with the registration period beginning on April 15 up to May 31. The Math Academy will conduct orientation sessions via Zoom for enrolled students on June 12 and June 15, PCC announced.

With Math Academy, PCC wants to share its inclusive approach and supportive environment to ensure that rising 7th and 8th graders receive the necessary tools and guidance for a positive math journey, and look forward to academic success as they transition into high school.

The Math Academy’s curriculum covers essential math concepts from basics to advanced levels, with topics ranging from arithmetic operations, algebraic structures, geometry principles, and problem-solving strategies. With a focus on inclusivity, Math Academy provides students exposure to a college campus, fostering new friendships, and instilling a sense of math confidence among participants.

The courses on Math Academy include Math Basics, Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1A, Algebra 1B, and Geometry. These courses will be conducted at the Community Education Center, at 3035 E. Foothill Blvd.

To familiarize enrolled students and their parents with the program structure, Math Academy has conducted information sessions in March, and orientation dates will be held in June. PCC said regular attendance is advised.

“Due to the short length of the program, we advise to keep absences to a minimum,” a program statement on PCC’s website said. “Please notify the instructor if your student will need to be absent. Our counselors advise that students don’t miss more than three classes for their own benefit.”

As part of the noncredit program, the Math Academy does not impact future college transcripts. Successful completion, however, may lead to credit recognition from certain middle schools, subject to their individual policies.
