Pasadena Educational Foundation Announces Latinas Inspired For Tomorrow (LIFT) Scholarship

The Pasadena Educational Foundation (PEF) announces the launch of the new Latinas Inspired For Tomorrow (LIFT) Scholarship to help at least one Latina student graduating from Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) high schools: Blair High School, Marshall High School, Muir High School, and Pasadena High School.

The scholarship will be awarded annually to Latina students who demonstrate a commitment to furthering their education and the potential to excel in college or by enrolling in a trade.

Founding members of the fund Katrina Ortega, Carolina Caro, Davah Donis, Sylvia Vega, Roxana Powell, Nancy Hernandez, and Gina Lucille were moved to create the fund after seeing the devastating impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the educational opportunities for young women of color. The fund will be managed in collaboration with PEF.

“For seniors inching towards their last days in high school, this year can be poignantly heartbreaking. There will be no prom, there will be no graduation parties and so on. The list of moments that they cannot recapture is long. That enough might compel you to want to raise their spirits. But then add to that the fact that this pandemic has disproportionately affected communities of color.” ~ Carolina Caro

It’s stories like these that compelled the women to get together to start the new fund to support these young students on their journey to continue their education. The fund is open to community support. (Click on this link if you’d like to donate).

Supporting the LIFT Scholarship is part of PEF’s commitment to recognize the achievements, accomplishments, talents, and financial need of PUSD students through their College Scholarships Program. PEF distributes over $50,000 a year in scholarships to graduating seniors on behalf of those entities. Scholarships can be specific to a field of study such as STEM or art, needs-based, or for academic achievements.
