PEF: Creating A More Inclusive & Equitable Learning Environment Through Community

Pasadena Educational Foundation (PEF) recently hosted a Community Engagement Forum to discuss important issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in education. The forum featured Allison Steppes, Ed. D., Institutional Equity & Title IX Coordinator, from the Office of Equity & Access in the Pasadena Unified School District. The discussion focused on the intersection of Title IX and DEI, and the ways in which community partners and leaders can work together to create a more inclusive and equitable learning environment for all students.

During the forum, Dr. Steppes emphasized the importance of recognizing and addressing issues related to DEI in education. She explained that “Title IX is about more than just gender equity; it’s about creating a safe and inclusive environment for all students, regardless of their race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or gender identity.” Steppes also stressed the need for ongoing education and training to ensure that everyone in the school community, including students, staff, and parents, understands their rights and responsibilities under Title IX and is equipped to create a supportive environment for all students.

The forum provided an opportunity for community partners and leaders to engage in a meaningful discussion about DEI and Title IX in education. Participants shared their experiences and insights, and discussed strategies for creating a more inclusive and equitable learning environment for all students. The event was part of ongoing efforts to promote DEI in education and support the success of all students in the Pasadena Unified School District.

As Dr. Steppes noted, “creating a more inclusive and equitable learning environment requires ongoing collaboration and commitment from everyone in the school community.” The Community Engagement Forum was a powerful example of this collaboration, bringing together community partners and leaders to work towards a shared goal of equity and inclusion in education.
