PEF: Fourteen PUSD Seniors Acquire California Seal of Civic Engagement

The California State Seal of Civic Engagement is a state-recognized honor awarded to high school students who demonstrate not only a strong understanding of democratic systems, but who have also taken meaningful action to address real problems in their community. It signals to colleges and employers that a student is civically knowledgeable, community-minded, and ready to contribute beyond the classroom. This year, PUSD had 14 students from two high schools – Blair and PHS – who were awarded with the seal.

Ashley Butler, who serves as TOSA II for Literacy and History/Social Science administered the project, said: “For students, it is a powerful affirmation that their voice, their work, and their presence in our democracy matters.”

“It feels more like it feels like a proof of my work more than anything,” agreed PHS senior Azucena P. “It feels like what I did matters. I spent a lot of time working on PUSD’s second youth conference and collaborating with others. There were minor tasks that felt useless at the time, but with the Seal, I feel as if the work paid off!”

When reminded that PUSD’s graduating class of 2026 is the first to receive the Seal, Azucena said: “It feels great to be the first at anything for anyone. I think it’s super exciting to be able to have that honor of being the first, and I’m excited.”

Another recipient, Sydney C. from Blair, said:

“For me, applying to the California Seal of Civic Engagement meant being able to honor my commitment of active participation in the community, not only at Blair but also district wide. By committing to the role of Associated Student Body President, where I would lead and provide for the student body at Blair, as well as being an active member in PUSD’s Student Think Tank, advocating for student voices throughout the district, I’ve become a qualified applicant to receive the California Seal of Civic Engagement.”
