PUSD Celebrates International Literacy Day, Inspiring Young Readers

Sunday marked International Literacy Day, a celebration that highlights the importance of literacy in communities like the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD). In PUSD, the journey toward literacy begins in early education classrooms, which feature robust and engaging libraries designed to inspire a love of reading. In these classrooms, the youngest learners and pre-readers engage in rhyming games, build their vocabulary, and listen to stories read aloud by their teachers—all essential steps in laying the foundation for reading. These children take great joy in independently sitting with a book, turning its pages, and narrating the story from memory using the illustrations as a guide. Lindsay Lewis, Director of Early Education for PUSD, captures this excitement by saying, “Just like music is the language of the soul, reading opens doors to creativity and imagination!”
