Ramona Convent Freshman Selected for Aquarium Volunteen Program

Ramona Convent freshman, Sophie Reyes was recently selected to participate in the Long Beach Aquarium Volunteen Program. Sophie was selected from a pool of 300 applicants as one of 20 student volunteers. The application included an essay, two teacher recommendations, and a face-to-face interview.

Her mother, Mona Reyes, shared that “… Ramona Convent has given Sophie the extra boost of courage and belief in herself to apply for this highly competitive program. She’s super excited not only about this opportunity at the Long Beach Aquarium but also her new volunteer assignment at a family clinic on the Westside where Sophie will be volunteering at the Pediatric Play Center…slowly and surely she is moving towards being quite remarkable and I have Ramona Convent to thank for that!”

The Long Beach Aquarium VolunTEEN Program is a special youth program offered three times a year. Youth between the ages of 14 and 16 are eligible to participate in a highly structured 80-hour program. Those who are selected after a competitive application process receive special instruction on many aspects of marine life and the Pacific Ocean; in turn, they share this information with guests at interactive stations in each gallery.

VolunTEENS are trained to explain to our guests about the Aquarium, its inhabitants and ecosystem. At the end of their volunteer commitment, each student will have gained the necessary skills for interpretation, public speaking, and literary research. These skills will allow them to instill a sense of wonder, respect, and stewardship for the Pacific Ocean, its inhabitants, and ecosystems. They will have also gained the level of skill to become an exhibit interpreter in our education department. At the end of the program’s duration, VolunTEENS will produce a final presentation that exhibits what they have gained from this program.
