Ramona Convent Students Host Advanced Placement (AP) Workshop for School Community

A recent school assembly at Ramona Convent Secondary School focused on AP Research, a course in the AP Capstone Program. Ramona Convent is one of only four Catholic high schools in the Los Angeles area selected by the College Board to implement AP Capstone – an innovative diploma program that encourages students to develop skills that matter for college and life—research, collaboration, and communication. The AP Capstone program consists of two courses taken in sequence: AP Seminar and AP Research. These courses complement the in-depth, subject-specific rigor of the 31 AP and Honors courses already part of the Ramona curriculum.

Students in the class presented their research projects to the Ramona community, giving them a chance to practice their presentation skills in front of an audience while generating interest in their research and potentially recruiting participants. In her introduction, Dr. Beatriz Amaya-Anderson, English Teacher, discussed the unique opportunity the capstone program offers, explaining that “it gives students a chance to do original, college-level research in high school.” The assembly is one of several assignments in AP Research intended to help students focus their ideas to complete a 20-page academic paper and prepare for a 20-minute presentation / oral defense held before the end of the school year.
