San Marino High School announces John Franklin (JJ) as its new varsity baseball coach. Coach Franklin has an extensive background in baseball which includes playing at Chino High School and California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona) as well as coaching at the college and high school levels. In addition to coaching baseball at SMHS, John has been hired to teach physical education (PE). Coach Franklin has impressed SMHS with his honest and calm demeanor.

As a player and baseball coach, John has excelled in both experiences. While at Chino High School, JJ earned First Team All Mt. Baldy League, Second Team All CIF, and Daily Bulletin First Team Inland Empire. After a successful high school baseball career as an infielder and pitcher, JJ had the opportunity to continue to play at Cal Poly Pomona. While there, JJ set the single season and the career save records at the school. After a successful playing career that included a trip to the College World Series, Coach Franklin joined the Cal Poly Pomona coaching staff as an assistant pitching coach. During his coaching career at the school, the team again reached the College World Series as well as the West Regional. After leaving the collegiate level, John was hired as a PE teacher as well as an assistant baseball coach at Whittier High School. JJ moved on to teach at City Honors International High School in Inglewood and has spent the last few years there trying to revive the baseball program at the charter school. Coach Franklin also has coaching experience at Chino Hills High School as well coaching the Inland Valley Pirates which was a collegiate summer baseball team. These various experiences will give Coach Franklin an extensive background to build upon.

As a teacher, Mr. Franklin’s tenure at Chino Valley, Whittier, and Inglewood has allowed him to grow as an educator. After completing his credential at Azusa Pacific University, JJ substituted at Chino Valley before getting hired as a full time PE teacher at Whittier High School. Due to declining enrollment, Mr. Franklin moved on from Whitter and has been at City Honors International High School for the last few years. In addition to teaching PE, JJ has also been a department chairperson as well as part of the school site council. In the classroom, San Marino is getting a polished educator who will excite our students as well as our athletes.

After a challenging 2021 baseball season, the Titans look forward to rebounding under Coach Franklin. His playing and coaching experience have prepared him for the position at SMHS. In addition, his calm demeanor will be a welcome addition to his fellow teaching colleagues. The Titan family cannot wait for the Franklin baseball era to begin in San Marino.
