San Marino Unified School District Continues to Excel

The State of California publicly released the 2019 California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (“CAASPP”) scores at https://caaspp-elpac.cde.ca.gov. San Marino Unified School District is once again a top performer among California unified school districts.

This is the fifth consecutive year in which San Marino USD has had the highest percentage of students meeting and exceeding standards on the CAASPP, a computer-adaptive standardized test administered to all public school students in grades 3-8 and 11. Additionally, San Marino USD students showed a 2% increase in English-Language Art scores and a 0.5% improvement in Math proficiencies. Before CAASPP, San Marino USD had ranked first among unified school districts for fifteen consecutive years due to its high percentage of students meeting and exceeding state standards as reflected by the Academic Performance Index (API).

“As the new Superintendent of this incredible school district, I stand in awe of the performance of our students and the instructional excellence of our teachers,” said Superintendent Dr. Jeff Wilson. “For a public unified school district to continue to show incremental improvement when our students have already demonstrated high levels of excellence over a long period of time, shows the commitment of our instructional staff to never rest on their laurels and to always challenge our students to reach for greater heights.”

SMUSD Board President Mrs. Lisa Link stated, “On behalf of the Board of Education, congratulations to the students of San Marino who continue to not only master but exceed state academic standards. Our students are blessed with outstanding teachers, support staff and administrators, as well as engaged parents and community members who provide the extra support necessary to ensure a safe learning environment and a comprehensive and excellent educational experience.”

SMUSD Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Mr. Jason Kurtenbach said, “We are proud of the work and accomplishments of our students and staff. We continue to reflect on our progress and practices that have gotten us this far. However, the hallmark of our greatness is not state testing, but our ability to remain focused on our mission to continually improve those practices to increase student engagement, voice and choice, and outcomes.”
