Social Learning Program at Frostig School
For children and teens with learning differences, mastering the unwritten rules of social behavior can be as difficult as deciphering letters on a page, and just as crucial to success in life. Frostig has built a social learning curriculum that helps students become socially competent at school, home and the community.
The cornerstone of social learning at Frostig is Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support, a research-based program that calls on all teachers and aides to actively promote and reward positive behaviors, such as being respectful and kind to classmates. Our goal is to create a school climate where students feel safe and involved so they may thrive academically, socially and emotionally.
Students also attend social learning classes where our full-time social learning director helps them build self-awareness, form friendships, understand and manage their emotions, and show empathy to others. Elementary and middle school students attend social learning classes weekly while high school students receive daily instruction.
Frostig School also organizes activities that allow students to practice what they learn in the classroom, such as the student-run Fly-By Café, the Holiday Boutique, where students sell crafts and baked goods, student clubs, Leadership Council and the high school peer mediation group.
