Southwestern Academy Plans Open House to Showcase Educational Philosophy

Community invited to explore historic San Marino campus's diverse learning environment

Southwestern Academy will host an open house event for prospective students in grades 6-12 and their families on Saturday, February 1, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event aims to introduce visitors to the academy’s college preparatory programs and unique educational approach at its picturesque campus in the heart of San Marino, where Spanish-style architecture and red-tiled roofs stand against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains.

“Students at Southwestern Academy benefit from having the opportunity to choose from a variety of college prep courses in an environment composed of their peers with diverse learning styles,” states the academy’s background materials. “Individuals here thrive in an environment that values intellectual curiosity and growth.”

“Southwestern scholars learn that good character comes from awareness of and empathy with others, and they gain the confidence to lead, be open-minded and use creative problem-solving for years beyond the classroom,” the academy emphasizes in its mission statement.

The open house will feature campus tours, and opportunities to meet with administrators, faculty, and admissions staff. Visitors can explore the academy’s academic programs, co-curricular offerings, and welcoming student culture firsthand. A panel discussion and family-style BBQ will conclude the event.

The academy’s educational philosophy centers on four guiding principles: Valuing the Individual, Contributing to the Whole, Expanding Opportunities, and Preparing for the Future. These principles shape the school’s diverse range of academic courses, co-curricular, and extracurricular activities.

With approximately 100 students, Southwestern Academy maintains an intentionally small and diverse community. The student body consists of 70% boarding students from nearly fifteen different countries and 30% day students from local communities, providing “a unique opportunity for students to forge lasting friendships and gain insights from peers with diverse backgrounds and experiences, preparing them for a globalized world.”

While the academy’s website offers a glimpse of the Southwestern experience, prospective families are encouraged to visit in person to witness the vibrant atmosphere that defines the school.
