Southwestern Academy Senior Leadership Experience
From September 1 through September 7, members of Southwestern Academy’s senior class traveled from San Marino to the school’s second campus near Sedona, AZ. Southwestern’s Beaver Creek Ranch Campus is comprised of 120 acres of tranquil landscape that includes historic rock and timber buildings, a half mile of river frontage, an indoor swimming pool, a gymnasium complete with climbing wall, and miles of National Forest trails for hiking and exploring.
Head of School/CEO Robin Jarchow explained the philosophy behind the second annual Senior Leadership Experience.
“Class trips are a cornerstone of team building, experiential learning and leadership development that can help establish a positive, community-focused culture for an entire school year,” she stated. “In our global society, how we interact, coexist and communicate with one another has rarely been more important. And for those students who may not seem as connected to their classmates as they might hope to be, this experience represents a unique opportunity to get to know one another, understand one another, and empathize with one another.”
The rural, remote campus is the perfect setting for a weeklong program that emphasizes team building skills, communication tools, heightened self-awareness, and electronic detox. Students are also afforded the time and space for deep reflection on their futures, while also being given increased responsibilities that help prepare them for college life and the broader world.
