SPUSD Committee Provides Input on Educational Technology

As the school year comes to a close, the South Pasadena Unified School District is recognizing the work of the SPUSD Ed Tech Committee, which was formed in 2024. The committee meets regularly throughout the year to discuss, evaluate, and synthesize information surrounding technology in schools and its impact on students.
This dedicated and hard-working group is made up of teachers, staff members, administrators, parents, and student volunteers. During the 2025–2026 school year, the committee focused heavily on artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI, examining both the opportunities and challenges these technologies present in educational settings.
Among its many contributions, the committee helped develop AI-specific questions for the district’s 2026 LCAP survey, which was distributed to parents, students, and staff in April 2026. Survey findings will be shared as part of the 2026–2027 LCAP presentation and will help guide revisions to the district’s digital citizenship curriculum, including the development of AI-related guidelines and best practices.
The committee is scheduled to reconvene after the start of the 2026–2027 school year to continue exploring appropriate parameters for technology use in schools. SPUSD’s one-to-one technology initiative begins in third grade, and as part of the state-required learning continuity plan, students must maintain online access to ensure digital textbooks and learning materials remain available during unforeseen school closures.
As these conversations continue, the district remains committed to balancing student safety, responsible technology use, and screen time recommendations. Social media platforms are automatically blocked on school-issued devices, and families also have the option to monitor their children’s technology use outside of school hours through the free Qustodio app.
SPUSD extends its gratitude to all committee members for the countless hours, thoughtful collaboration, and ongoing commitment dedicated to these important and evolving topics.
