St. Philip the Apostle School’s Academic Decathlon Team

Seventeen St. Philip the Apostle Junior High students have been preparing since this past summer to compete in this year’s 31st annual Academic Junior High Decathlon competition. Almost 100 Catholic schools compete each year in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. This year’s team includes both 7th and 8th graders; some serving as core members who will compete on the day of competition, and others as alternates that help the team go to the competition prepared for success.

Throughout the summer, the team began to prepare for the Logic portion of the competition by completing a variety of puzzles. We have continued our logic practices every Friday since the start of the school year, and we are now divided into specific subject areas including; Science, Math, Religion, Fine Arts, Literature, Grammar, Social Studies, and Current Events. We have now begun practicing as a team twice a week. Academic Decathlon is our chance to represent our school and learn new skills beyond the classroom. We learn to challenge ourselves, practice teamwork and leadership, and have a lot of fun during study sessions. I’m so happy to be able to represent St. Philip the Apostle and the great academics at our school through Academic Decathlon.
