St. Rita School’s Speech and Debate Team recently competed at the California State Middle School Speech & Debate Championship at Glendale Community College. Twenty-six schools from around the state competed. Two of our students reached the finals — Katy Bauer in Dramatic Interpretation and Esteban Sanchez in Extemporaneous Speaking.

Katy’s powerful performance of a girl recounting the difficulties her mentally disabled brother faces garnered her the 8th place award. Esteban took home the 5th place award in Extemp — a challenging event that requires a student to research and prepare to deliver a seven minute speech with only 30 minutes to prepare. The speeches were based on current affairs, with topic areas that included international and domestic policy, economic policy, and technology issues.

This is the first time that the team has competed at the state level and St. Rital is extremely proud of the hard work that Katy and Esteban put in. St. Rita congratulates them on their outstanding showing!
