The Cross in the Parking Lot Is Waiting for Your Flower

Pasadena Christian School opens its April to the whole neighborhood — enrolled or not — as its preschoolers stay in class through spring break for a national early childhood celebration

There is a cross in the parking lot at 1485 N. Los Robles Avenue, wrapped in rope, waiting for flowers.

Pasadena Christian School’s preschool is inviting anyone in the community — not just families with children enrolled — to stop by throughout April and tuck a flower into the cross, according to the school’s April news post. The cross-decorating tradition marks Good Friday and Easter Sunday, the school says, and it is one of the few ways the 75-year-old Pasadena institution opens its campus to the broader neighborhood without a registration form.

April is a busy month at PCS — and an unusual one. When the main campus empties for spring break April 6 through April 10, the preschool next door stays open. The school is keeping its youngest students, children as young as 1.5 years old, in class April 7 through April 10 for the Week of the Young Child, which the school describes as a national celebration of early childhood. Each day of the week will carry its own theme and special events, according to school communications, and parents are invited to volunteer.

The preschool closes for Good Friday on April 3 and Easter Monday on April 6. Before the break, the April 2 chapel — described by the school as focusing on the story of Good Friday and Resurrection Sunday — opens the month’s faith programming. The school’s Fruit of the Spirit theme for April is Faithfulness.

Back on the main campus, April 1 begins with an All School Chapel at 9:30 a.m. The 8th Grade East Coast Trip parent meeting is Monday, April 13, at 6:30 p.m. The Parent Teacher Fellowship holds its spring Parent Workshop on Wednesday, April 15, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. April 16 is 8th Grade Picture Day. An Accreditation Team Visit runs at the preschool campus April 19 through April 22.

The school’s Big Yellow House extended care program — which carries additional fees — continues its after-school enrichment schedule in April: Tennis on the 14th, American Sign Language on the 16th, Basketball SuperStars on the 17th, and SoccerStars on the 24th.

Pasadena Christian School describes itself as an independent Christian institution that has been part of this community for more than 75 years, according to the school. It is listed as accredited by the Association of Christian Schools International and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The main campus is at 1515 N. Los Robles Avenue; the preschool, at 1485. Reach the school at 626-791-1214 or at pasadenachristian.org.

The cross in the parking lot will be waiting, if you’d like to bring something.
