When Community Carries You Forward: A Blair High School Student’s Journey Beyond the Marathon

For Students Run LA (SRLA), running has always been about more than finishing a race – it’s about resilience, connection, and the power of showing up for one another. This year, that mission came to life in a profound way through the journey of one Blair High School sophomore.
Just weeks before the Los Angeles Marathon, Abel, a student from Blair High School, experienced a devastating loss when the Eaton Fire destroyed his family’s home. In a single moment, nearly everything was gone – including the running shoes he trained in and the medal from his first marathon.
Despite the setback, Abel didn’t step away from his goal.
Supported by his SRLA teammates, dedicated coaches, and a deeply connected community, he continued training under extraordinary circumstances. When marathon day arrived, Abel once again crossed the finish line—completing the LA Marathon for the second consecutive year. This time, the moment carried even greater meaning as he ran alongside his mother, Lupe.
Reflecting on his experience, Abel shared that while losing a home was not something he ever imagined, running gave him a way to move forward. The rhythm of training, the encouragement of his team, and the belief of those around him became a source of strength during an incredibly difficult time.
Abel’s story reflects the heart of SRLA—a program built on perseverance, mentorship, and community. Across the organization, students learn that running strong isn’t just about physical endurance; it’s about lifting one another up, especially when the road becomes hardest.
Today, supporters have an opportunity to strengthen that heartbeat even further. Through December 31, all donations to SRLA are matched dollar for dollar, up to $50,000—doubling the impact of every gift.
Each contribution helps ensure that students like Abel have the support, resources, and encouragement they need to keep moving forward—on the course and in life.
Students Run LA (https://www.srla.org/) annually inspires more than 3,000 middle and high school students to train for and complete the Los Angeles Marathon, proving year after year that community can carry you farther than you ever imagined.
