A relatively new addition to the car scene is the subcompact crossover. Making a smaller footprint, they are easier to park in cramped spaces and offer roominess that compact sedans sometimes lack. The Toyota C-HR was introduced in 2018 and fills the subcompact crossover’s shoes nicely. For 2019 the C-HR gets a few equipment additions like standard Apple CarPlay and an optional navigation system.

Available in three trim levels: LE, XLE, and Limited, this review will focus on the Limited trim level.

Some of the special features on the top trim Limited are: foglights, automatic wipers, leather upholstery, heated front seats, driver two-way power lumbar adjustment, and an upgraded infotainment system that adds a Wi-Fi hotspot, remote vehicle controls, and satellite and HD radio. The Limited also includes the XLE’s 18-inch alloy wheels, power-folding mirrors, keyless ignition and entry, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert.

Powered by a lack-luster 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine, the C-HR produces 144 horses and 139 pound-feet of torque. The engine is paired to a variable automatic transmission and only comes available in front-wheel drive. Expect to get 27/city, 31/highway and 29/combined mpg.

The interior of the C-HR benefits from a simple layout. Controls are easily accessed, and fairly intuitive to use. Both front and backseat passengers benefit from a roomy cabin, making it a great get-around town car.

There is no zipping around town in the C-HR, the engine is slow to respond which makes it a bit challenging at highway speeds and when entering the freeway. Steering is sporty, however, and makes the ride fun when driving curvy roads. The cabin is not the quietest in the class and there is a fair amount of road noise which can be distracting on longer drives.

The 2019 Toyota C-HR Limited is a cute, petite crossover with room and a bit of fun.
