Pasadena second graders will have a chance to make their own Lucha Libros mask via an online event Thursday aimed at helping them become reading warriors as they compete in the Lucha Libros reading competition sponsored by the Pasadena Public Library throughout the year.

In the Lucha Libros competition, participants will read four assigned chapters from books and meet four times at the library to answer comprehension questions about the books they’ve read. They’ll earn a prize for participation at each meeting, and each correct answer earns points as well.

At the end of the year, the top five scorers will receive medals, and the team with the most points overall will also get ribbons. To learn more about the competition, visit https://cityofpasadena.libguides.com/lucha-libros.

Before the virtual meeting, each participant will receive a mask template by email to print out at home. During the Zoom meeting, Youth Services Librarian AnnMarie Kolakowski will go over how to make the mask, how the book club meetings will work, and answer some sample questions from the competition. The library will then sign up participants for either the San Rafael or Lamanda Park library branch teams.

Future meetings will be in-person after school at the San Rafael or Lamanda Park branches.

To sign up for Thursday’s virtual event and to get the mask PDF plus the link to the Zoom meeting, visit https://pasadena.evanced.info/signup/EventDetails?eventid=4638 or call your local branch library. After the first meeting, participants will pick up their books from their assigned branch.
