The 90-minute behind-the-scenes tour offers an intimate look at the 25,000-square-foot facility that opened in 2022. “Join us for a behind-the-scenes nursery tour to see what it takes to care for and preserve the diverse plants of Descanso Gardens. This tour will focus on the roses of Descanso — in particular how to breed, propagate, and care for them,” according to the official event description.
The nursery houses extraordinary collections, including rare F.M. Uyematsu camellia varieties that are “practically impossible to locate commercially” and Lammerts hybrid lilacs, specially developed for Southern California’s warmer climate.
Leading the facility is Frank Obregon, described as “the irrepressible and gregarious plant devotee and nurseryman” who “runs the Descanso nursery facilities and operations.” Obregon brings expertise in plant breeding, ornamental horticulture, and California native plant conservation.
“In 2022, we opened a new 25,000-square-foot facility dedicated to our nursery operations. With the opening of the Ruth Borun Nursery and Propagation Center, we’re turning the page to a new chapter of growth, sustainability, and innovation,” Descanso Gardens announced.
“Behind-the-Scenes Nursery Tour” will run on Saturday, August 30 at 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Descanso Gardens, 1418 Descanso Drive, in La Cañada Flintridge. For more call (818) 949-4200 or visit https://www.descansogardens.org/event/bts-nursery-tour/. Tickets: $5 for members, $10 for non-members.
