The “Artists’ Choice” exhibition is one of the few shows on the society’s calendar that runs unjuried — members choose which of their own works to enter, providing a wider window into the breadth of style across the membership than the society’s tightly judged Annual Exhibition allows. Pasadena Society of Artists membership has long encompassed painters, sculptors, printmakers and mixed-media artists working across impressionist, modernist, abstract and traditional styles, a diversity the society notes has been intentional since its founding.
The society was founded after a March 1925 meeting called by Benjamin Brown, then known as the “dean of Pasadena painters.” Among the original 15 were Edward B. Butler, Maud Daggett, Louis Hovey Sharp, F. Carl Smith and Orrin A. White — names still recognizable to Southern California art historians. The society’s annual exhibition has run without interruption since 1925, even through wartime and pandemic.
Creative Arts Group, located in Sierra Madre, is one of the region’s longest-running community arts centers and a frequent host for member-society exhibitions across the foothills. The space is small enough to encourage close encounters with individual works and to make conversation with the artists themselves a likely part of any visit.
