The Muir Mystics Dance Team will present “Edge of a Dream,” a dance performance inspired by the photography of Kwame Brathwaite, from Feb. 28 to March 8, 2025, at 7 p.m. at Lineage Performing Arts Center in Pasadena. The production will bring Brathwaite’s powerful imagery to life through movement, rhythm and emotion, celebrating his legacy and the cultural significance of his work.
Brathwaite, born in Harlem in 1938, documented Black life, culture and activism over six decades. He was a key figure in the Black is Beautiful movement, using his photography to promote self-empowerment and embrace natural hair and African-inspired fashion. His work, exhibited at institutions such as the New-York Historical Society and the Aperture Foundation, continues to influence contemporary discussions on identity and representation in art.
The Muir Mystics Dance Team’s performance will serve as a dynamic tribute, translating Brathwaite’s visual narratives into motion. By embodying the resilience, beauty and spirit captured in his photography, the dancers offer audiences an immersive way to engage with his artistry.
This production is supported by the Lineage Performing Arts Center, a Pasadena-based organization that collaborates with local schools to provide dance education and performance opportunities. The event underscores Pasadena’s commitment to celebrating diverse artistic expressions and honoring historical themes through contemporary performance.
