A Noise Within’s 2025–26 Season: ‘Songs from the Volcano’ Offers a Fiery Blend of Classics and Contemporary Resonance

Published on Jun 5, 2025

A Noise Within (ANW), the Pasadena-based classical repertory theatre company, has unveiled its 2025–26 season under the evocative title “Songs from the Volcano.” This season promises a compelling lineup of six productions that delve into themes of upheaval, transformation, and the enduring human spirit. The selected plays range from uproarious farce to poignant drama, each echoing the metaphorical eruption suggested by the season’s title.

A Season of Transformation and Resilience

The season opens with Richard Bean’s One Man, Two Guvnors (August 31 – September 28, 2025), directed by ANW’s Producing Artistic Directors Geoff Elliott and Julia Rodriguez Elliott. This modern adaptation of Goldoni’s Servant of Two Masters is set in 1960s Brighton, England, and follows the hapless Francis Henshall as he juggles two employers, leading to a cascade of comedic misadventures. The production is noted for its physical comedy, rapid-fire wit, and live skiffle band, offering audiences a lively theatrical experience.

Following is August Wilson’s Joe Turner’s Come and Gone (October 12 – November 9, 2025), directed by Gregg T. Daniel. This marks ANW’s sixth production from Wilson’s American Century Cycle. Set in a Pittsburgh boarding house in 1911, the play explores the lives of African Americans seeking identity and connection in the aftermath of slavery and during the Great Migration. Wilson’s lyrical dialogue and rich characterizations delve into themes of freedom, self-discovery, and the healing power of community.

The holiday season features Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol (November 29 – December 24, 2025), adapted for the stage by Geoff Elliott. This long-standing tradition at ANW brings to life the classic tale of Ebenezer Scrooge’s redemption, filled with music and festive cheer suitable for audiences of all ages.

Confronting Power and Mortality

In the new year, ANW presents William Shakespeare’s Richard III (February 8 – March 8, 2026), directed by Guillermo Cienfuegos. This historical drama portrays the Machiavellian rise to power of Richard III, offering a study in ambition, manipulation, and the corrosive effects of unchecked authority. The production aims to provide a gripping exploration of political intrigue and moral decay.

Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman (March 22 – April 19, 2026), directed by Julia Rodriguez Elliott, follows. This Pulitzer Prize-winning play examines the disillusionment of Willy Loman, an aging salesman grappling with the collapse of his dreams and the harsh realities of the American Dream. Miller’s work remains a poignant commentary on ambition, identity, and societal expectations.

The season concludes with Eugène Ionesco’s Exit the King (May 3 – 31, 2026), translated by Donald Watson and directed by Michael Michetti. This absurdist play centers on King Bérenger, who refuses to accept his impending death, symbolizing the human struggle against mortality and the inevitable decline of power. Ionesco’s work blends dark humor with existential themes, offering a reflective end to the season.
