That expanding audience will gather under the stars at The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens on Friday, September 19, for an outdoor screening of DreamWorks Animation’s “The Wild Robot.” The event transforms the Library Lawn into a cinematic oasis where families can experience the touching tale of an intelligent robot learning to survive on an uninhabited island.
Director Chris Sanders brought Brown’s beloved character to life, earning the author’s early confidence. “I thought, ‘Okay, I’m in good hands,’” Brown says of Sanders’ involvement.
The 102-minute film follows Roz, voiced by Lupita Nyong’o, as she adapts to island life, building relationships with animals and adopting an orphaned gosling. The robot’s journey underscores a central theme: “Sometimes to survive, we must become more than we were programmed to be.”
Gates open at 6:30 p.m., with screening at dusk. The Huntington offers refreshments from classic movie snacks to gourmet options and Twist Churro Truck desserts. Before the film, educators will host hands-on creativity stations for all ages.
Only low-back chairs (≤12″) are permitted, and outside alcohol is prohibited. Tickets require advance online purchase and are nonrefundable.
