When Stanley Oropesa pulls out his accordion at Jones Coffee Roasters, he’s on a mission to change how people hear an instrument often relegated to polka halls and street corners.

“I do a lot of yanin on my accordion… to see if you can let people hear it differently,” said Oropesa during a December 2023 recording session.

The accordionist, who has participated in Bach in the Subways performances, is scheduled to perform this Friday, Aug. 15 at 11 a.m. at the coffee shop in a special free performance sponsored by Jones Coffee Roasters.

For Oropesa, the venue represents community connection.

During his regular weekly performances, he explained: “I play here… from 12:15 to 1:15, and I get coffee—I have to pay for it—but I meet my people like you.”

Working with teacher Nick Ariando, the accordionist finds satisfaction in performing original compositions.

“It’s very satisfying to bring my own stuff to life,” he said.

Oropesa’s approach represents a broader effort to expand the accordion’s musical territory beyond traditional expectations.

“Stanley Oropesa Performs” will run on Friday, Aug. 15 at 11 a.m. Jones Coffee Roasters, 693 S. Raymond Ave., in Pasadena. For more call (626) 564-9291 or visit https://www.jonescoffeeroasters.com/pages/events. Tickets: Free
