Just months after the Eaton Fire devastated in Pasadena, the Jefferson Branch Library is turning October’s Fire Prevention Month into a family learning opportunity with new urgency.

The free event on Tuesday, October 7, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., will feature fire safety activities for children ages zero through nine and caregivers, including fire safety–themed storytime, crafts, giveaways, and visits from Freddie the Fire Engine—an interactive talking fire truck—and Pasadena Fire Department members.

Fire Chief Chad Augustin, reflecting on the January fire response, told the City Council: “One of my biggest takeaways from this fire was that we did not have enough chief officers for your city.”

Fire Prevention Week focuses on “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home”—a message carrying added significance in a rebuilding community.

The Jefferson Branch Library, specializing in children and teen services, provides an ideal venue for reaching families with safety education.

Chief Augustin, Pasadena’s 12th fire chief since February 22, leads a department responding to over 17,000 emergency calls for service in 2021.

The department runs the “Learn Not to Burn” program for children preschool through sixth grade.

The Pasadena Police and Fire Departments recently received the 2025 Paul Harris Community Award from the Pasadena Rotary Club, recognizing their service during the devastating Eaton Fire.

Fire Prevention Month at the Library will run on Tuesday, October 7 at 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Jefferson Branch Library, 1500 E Villa St., Pasadena.
