Beethoven’s groundbreaking influence on the concerto takes center stage Thursday, July 24, as the Pasadena Senior Center presents “The Concerto (Part Two)” from 2 to 4 p.m.
The live, in-person lecture is the second in the Summer Masters Series, which continues weekly through August 21.
The speaker, Alan Chapman, is a respected figure in classical music education and broadcasting. He holds a Ph.D. in music theory from Yale University and earned his undergraduate degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Currently on the music theory faculty at the Colburn Conservatory, Chapman previously taught at Occidental College.
He is also a producer and on-air host at Classical KUSC, where he leads weekday programming and the Saturday night show “Modern Times.”
Since 1984, Chapman has appeared regularly in the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s “Upbeat Live” series and developed the “Music 101” evenings at Walt Disney Concert Hall.
Chapman is active as a composer and lyricist. His works have been recognized by ASCAP, the Johnny Mercer Foundation and the Manhattan Association of Cabarets.
His children’s opera, “Les Moose: The Operatic Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle,” was commissioned by Los Angeles Opera.
He also performs original songs with his wife, soprano Karen Benjamin, at venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and the Los Angeles Music Center.
The Summer Masters Series offers six multimedia presentations with musical examples and vibrant visuals.
Topics include Beethoven, French composers and Spanish musical traditions.
