The Altadena Libraries will launch its summer reading program with a community-wide kickoff celebration on Saturday, June 7, at the Main Library. The event offers a variety of free activities designed to encourage reading and library participation throughout the summer months for residents of all ages.
The Summer Reading Kickoff will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Main Library parking lot at 600 E. Mariposa Street. The library pointed out that this is an all ages event, welcoming everyone from the community to participate in the summer reading program and festivities.
From 10 a.m. to noon, attendees can sign up for the summer reading program while enjoying jumbo games, mini Dungeons & Dragons sessions, crafts, and face painting.
Additional morning activities include a photo booth operated by Syd Studios, a seedling giveaway from a local preschool, and a community board game swap. Bevel Coffee will be on site with beverages available for purchase.
Families with children in TK through 3rd grade can receive free books through the Families In Schools book distribution program. The library will also offer “Read LA!” storytime and “¡Leamos LA!” hora de cuento for younger participants.
The morning festivities will culminate with a magic show featuring performer Robert Ramirez from noon to 1 p.m.
Beyond the kickoff event, Altadena Libraries will provide free lunch for children and teens 18 and under on weekdays from June 9 through August 1. Lunch service will run from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Main Library.
The lunch program is supported by the California State Department of Agriculture and administered by the California Department of Education. Additional funding comes from the State of California, making Altadena Libraries an equal opportunity provider for this essential summer service.
