The library hosts Early Literacy Play at Loma Alta Park on Tuesday, Nov. 18, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. The free 45-minute program offers sensory play and hands-on learning designed to support early literacy skills including language development, communication and imaginative play for children ages two through five and their families.
“Early literacy activities revolve around five main concepts: reading, singing, talking, playing, and writing with your child,” according to the library’s website. “Early literacy activities help your child develop skills that they will use to become successful readers.”
District Director Nikki Winslow told BBC following the fire: “I was able to visit yesterday and see that besides like being very smokey and the aona not being great the library is in great shape and I feel like that’s really important because we’re going to be integral in the recovery process for the community.”
The program takes place at Loma Alta Park, 3330 N. Lincoln Ave., in Altadena, which reopened in May following $4.5 million in renovations funded by the FireAid L.A. concert in partnership with the Annenberg Foundation.
Research shows early literacy promotion produces beneficial effects translating into increases of one day per week of parent—child reading activity and four— to nine—point increases in expressive and receptive language scores.
The library also offers 1000 Books Before Kindergarten and Baby Storytime & Play programs.
