The Altadena Library is set to present “Ecos de España: Spanish Classical & Flamenco Music & Dance,” a free family program showcasing the vibrant culture of Spain. The event, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024, from 11 a.m. to noon, will take place at the library’s location on 600 East Mariposa Street in Altadena, California.

Flamenco dancer Susana Elena will headline the event, introducing and performing various dances from Spain and Gypsy Spain. Accompanying her will be solo classical guitarist Randy Pile, who will play a selection of timeless compositions created for the Spanish guitar.

The interactive program aims to engage audience members of all ages. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn how to clap to flamenco rhythms and mimic the arm and hand movements of flamenco dancers.

Children will be invited onstage at the end of the show to participate in a simple flamenco dance using scarves. Following the performance, audience members can learn to play the Spanish castanets, with Susana Elena bringing extras and offering an introductory workshop.

“Experience the beauty and sophistication of a Hispanic performing art with multicultural roots that extend far beyond the Americas,” states the event description provided by the library. This sentiment underscores the cultural significance of the program.

The event organizers emphasize the educational aspect of the performance. Audience members will gain insight into the rich traditions of Spanish classical and flamenco music and dance through both observation and participation.
