Altadena Music Theater Announces Auditions for ‘Guys & Dolls’ Production

Community theater seeks adult actors for October performances, offering stipends and inclusive environment
Published on Jul 11, 2024

The Altadena Music Theater has opened auditions for its upcoming adult production of “Guys & Dolls,” for performances in October at the Charles Farnsworth Amphitheater.

The theater company, a female-owned and operated 501(c)(3) nonprofit, aims to enrich the Los Angeles community through live musical theater, arts advocacy, and youth programs.

Auditions for the classic musical comedy will be held on July 23 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., with callbacks scheduled for July 27 and dance auditions on July 28. Principal auditions will be held at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, at 1757 N Lake Ave. in Pasadena.

Actors must be at least 18 years old and available for evening rehearsals and performances from Oct. 7-13 and Oct. 17-20, according to the announcement.

The production team includes Sarah Azcarate as producer, Doug Kreeger as director, Nico O’Connor as choreographer, and Chris Wade as music director.

“Guys and Dolls” is described as an “oddball romantic comedy” set in Damon Runyon’s mythical New York City, following gamblers and missionaries through various city locales.

Runyon (1880-1946) wrote the short stories “The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown” and “Blood Pressure” from which the musical was based. These stories, written in the 1920s and 1930s, concerned gangsters, gamblers, and other characters of the New York underworld.

The theater emphasizes a fast-paced rehearsal process, with most cast members called about four times a week for three to four weeks before the show opens.

A $200 stipend will be provided to actors at the end of the run, reflecting the theater’s commitment to supporting local talent in this non-union production.

Performers unable to attend in-person auditions are encouraged to submit video auditions by email to altadenaauditions@gmail.com by July 22.

The Altadena Music Theatre provides “a live theater experience that is gentle, nonthreatening, and professional,” according to its mission statement, while promoting inclusion across ethnic, economic, and geographic barriers.

Dance auditions will be held at Pasadena Dance Theatre, with girls’ call at 11 a.m. and guys’ call at 1 p.m. on July 28.

Rehearsals are set to begin on Sept. 10 and will take place in the evenings and on weekends, with performances scheduled for Thursday through Sunday, Oct. 10-20.

The Charles Farnsworth Amphitheater is at 568 E. Mount Curve Ave. in Altadena.
