In an age when Amazon can deliver anything to your door in hours, 20,000 people still wake up before dawn once a month to dig through other people’s castoffs in a football stadium parking lot.
What draws them to the Rose Bowl Flea Market isn’t convenience—it’s the irreplaceable thrill of discovery that no algorithm can replicate.
What began in 1968 as a modest gathering of 200 vendors has evolved into what the Travel Channel calls one of the ten best flea markets in the world.
The market transforms one of America’s most storied football stadiums into a 10-hour monthly wonderland of vintage finds and antiques.
“There were about 200 vendors when the flea market first started in 1968. Now 2,500 represents a sold-out event, and we consistently meet that number,” said Dennis R. Dodson, chief operating officer of R.G. Canning Enterprises.
The market draws approximately 20,000 visitors monthly, including 1,500 tourists.
“We heard the Rose Bowl is a must, so here we are,” said Laurent Michel, a visitor from Paris who arrived directly from LAX airport.
Dubbed the “Flea Market of the Stars” for over 50 years due to celebrity sightings, the market operates with color-coded sections: orange for antiques, white for vintage clothing, purple for arts and crafts, and blue, pink and red for contemporary goods.
“It’s a great experience to go to a flea market and go treasure hunting. And the Rose Bowl is famous for that,” said Dennis Dodson.
Food vendors offer Danish pastries, hamburgers, tacos, pizza, sushi, coffee and alcoholic beverages, with most food items now typically costing $10 to $15.
“Rose Bowl Flea Market” will run on the second Sunday of every month at 5 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Early Bird Admission 5 a.m. to 8:45 a.m., General Admission 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.).
