The Huntington’s Rose Garden hosted “An Evening Among the Roses,” a sold-out celebration of the LGBTQ+ community, on Friday, June 12, drawing guests for an evening of music, cocktails and dancing under the stars.
Both general admission and VIP tickets sold out ahead of the one-night event, which ran from 7 to 10 p.m. at The Huntington, 1151 Oxford Road in San Marino.
VIP ticketholders began the evening at 5 p.m. with a viewing of “Laura Aguilar: Body and Landscape,” an exhibition featuring evocative photographs by Aguilar from the 1980s through the early 2000s. A Chicana lesbian artist, Aguilar explored intersections of land, identity and community in her work.
From 6 to 7 p.m., VIP guests gathered on the south terrace of the Huntington Art Gallery for an exclusive cocktail reception featuring a performance by the Gay Freedom Band of Los Angeles.
The main party followed from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Rose Garden, with music, specialty cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, a special performance and dancing under the stars among the garden’s blooms. Pride Poets also performed during the evening.
Attendees were encouraged to embrace a western-inspired garden party flair for the evening — “boots, rhinestones, florals, and a touch of disco sparkle” — for a joyful and festive night of Pride and celebration. Rising to the challenge, guests were decked out in their western best.
The annual event is part of The Huntington’s broader recognition of Pride Month, intended to honor the contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer members of the community to the institution.
