A San Francisco-based chamber ensemble that has become a leading force in Chinese music in the United States will bring traditional instruments and contemporary compositions to Sierra Madre Playhouse on Nov. 22.

Melody of China, founded in 1993, will perform at 11 a.m. at the venue, 87 W. Sierra Madre Blvd., in Sierra Madre. The ensemble features traditional Chinese instruments including the yangqin (hammered dulcimer), guzheng (zither), pipa (lute), erhu (two-stringed fiddle), dizi (bamboo flute), and sheng (mouth organ), integrating them into contemporary compositions.

Musicians Gangqin Zhao, Strauss Shi, and Thomas Lee are scheduled to perform.

The group is led by Artistic and Executive Director Yangqin Zhao, a yangqin master and co-founder. The ensemble’s mission is to promote Chinese classical, folk, and contemporary music while bridging traditional Chinese culture with diverse American audiences.

Melody of China’s 2025 season includes cross-cultural collaborations, including a project with the Ali Akbar College of Music uniting Chinese and Indian instruments in joint performance.

Melody of China will run on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 11 a.m. Sierra Madre Playhouse, 87 W. Sierra Madre Blvd., Sierra Madre. For more information, call (626) 355-4318 or visit https://www.sierramadreplayhouse.org/event/melodyofchina2025. Ticket prices: $12
