Michael Lobel
Pasadena’s Norton Simon Museum will host a lecture examining Vincent van Gogh’s complex relationship with the natural world as industrialization transformed the landscape during the artist’s lifetime.
Michael Lobel, Professor of Art History at Hunter College and the CUNY Graduate Center, will present “Van Gogh and the Limits of Nature” on Saturday, May 31, from 5 to 6 p.m. at the museum’s theater.
The talk will analyze works from the museum’s collection and elsewhere to reconsider van Gogh’s imagery and artistic approach in relation to historical circumstances. Lobel will also discuss the relevance of the artist’s work to contemporary environmental challenges.
Lobel is the author of four books, including his most recent work, “Van Gogh and the End of Nature,” published in 2024 by Yale University Press.
The lecture is free with museum admission. While advance tickets for members are now closed, walk-up tickets will be available one hour before the program begins.
Doors open 30 minutes prior to the lecture, and all attendees must be seated by 4:50 p.m.
