On any given Thursday morning at the Pasadena Senior Center, you might find seniors perfecting their French pronunciation in one room while others master iPhone photography down the hall. This Thursday, November 6 at 10 a.m., the center is opening its doors for free guided tours that reveal what six and a half decades of innovation in senior services actually looks like.

The tours aren’t just a walk through a building at 85 E. Holly Street. They’re a window into an institution that opened in May 1960 as the first nonprofit senior center in Southern California and one of the first in the nation. In March 1999, it became the first senior center in California to receive national accreditation from the National Council on Aging’s National Institute of Senior Centers.

“Take a guided tour with a PSC ambassador and learn how the center can enhance your life,” the center invites visitors. “Peek in on various activities at the center, such as an art class, dance lessons, computer lab and dozens more, and learn everything else about this first-ever accredited senior center in California.”

The center offers more than 100 activities, events, classes and support groups covering everything from ballroom dancing and tai chi to bilingual tech help and balance workshops. A weekday lunch program serves anyone 60 and older, while a food pantry makes deliveries to those who are homebound or experiencing financial hardship.

“We welcome all older adults regardless of race, creed, ethnicity, nationality or residency,” the center states. Membership is open to anyone over 50, and residency in Pasadena is not required.

Tours are offered every Monday at noon and Thursday at 10 a.m. To schedule a tour, visit www.pasadenaseniorcenter.org or call (626) 795-4331.
