When Maurene Goo’s matchmaker discovers she can see her clients’ past lives to find their fated soulmates, she faces an impossible choice: follow destiny or forge her own path.
“As my debut adult novel, One & Only is immensely important to me,” Goo said in a statement to People magazine. “It’s a book that brought me pure joy to write and I hope to spread that feeling out into our incredibly fraught world.”
On Feb. 9 at 7 p.m., Goo will discuss and sign her new novel at Vroman’s Bookstore in conversation with fellow author and screenwriter Yulin Kuang.
Goo’s novel, published Feb. 3 by Penguin Random House, has earned recognition as Read With Jenna’s February 2026 pick. Publishers describe it as “In Five Years meets a millennial The Joy Luck Club.” The protagonist, Cassia Park, is a matchmaker whose family possesses a magical ability to identify soulmates through past-life vision.
“‘One & Only’ by Maurene Goo is the perfect book for February,” said TODAY host Jenna Bush Hager. “This narrative explores themes of destiny versus autonomy, love and dedication, and the bond between mothers and daughters.”
Kuang brings credentials as screenwriter, director and novelist whose debut romance “How to End a Love Story” also received Reese’s Book Club recognition. She’s currently adapting Emily Henry’s novels for screen, serving as writer-director for “Beach Read” for 20th Century Studios.
The event takes place at Vroman’s Bookstore, 695 E. Colorado Blvd., in Pasadena.
