In a society often defined by fragmentation, hostility, and misperception, author David Brooks suggests a remedy lies in a profoundly creative act: looking someone in the eye and seeing something large in them.

On Tuesday, Jan. 13, the Pasadena Public Library will host the prominent cultural writer for a virtual discussion on his book, “How to Know a Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen.”

The free online event explores Brooks’ “welcoming, hopeful, integrated approach to human connection.” Drawing from psychology, neuroscience, theater, philosophy, history, and education, Brooks aims to help readers find “the joy that comes from being seen.”

The discussion poses essential questions for anyone yearning to be understood, including: “If you want to know a person, what kind of attention should you cast on them?”

Driven by a “trademark sense of curiosity,” Brooks stresses that seeing others deeply allows us to “see something larger in ourselves.”

Registration is required. Participants may sign up and submit questions at https://libraryc.org/pasadenalibrary/105073. For accessibility requests, contact Shauna Redmond at sredmond@cityofpasadena.net or 626-744-4210 at least 72 hours in advance.
