Stuart Neville, the acclaimed crime novelist, will discuss his foray into horror fiction at Vroman’s Bookstore in Pasadena on Saturday, Aug. 24 at 2 p.m. The Los Angeles Times Book Prize winner will present his upcoming novel “Blood Like Mine” in conversation with author Jo Kaplan.
Neville’s new book marks a departure from his previous works in the crime genre. “Blood Like Mine” follows a mother’s desperate efforts to protect her daughter during a perilous journey across the Southwest.
The novel reveals a tense narrative centered on Rebecca Carter, a single mother fleeing with her adolescent daughter, Moonflower. Their story intertwines with that of FBI Special Agent Marc Donner, who is pursuing a vicious serial killer.
Neville’s debut novel “The Ghosts of Belfast” won the Mystery/Thriller category of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and was picked as one of the top crime novels of 2009 by both The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times. He has been shortlisted for numerous awards, including the Mystery Writers of America Edgar, Crime Writers’ Association Dagger, Theakstons Old Peculier Novel of the Year, Barry, Macavity, Dilys awards, and the Irish Book Awards Crime Novel of the Year.
The author has published nine more critically acclaimed books, two under the pen name Haylen Beck. In 2020, Soho Press will publish his first short story collection, “The Traveller and Other Stories.” Neville’s work has been translated into several languages and has received international recognition.
Jo Kaplan is a Shirley Jackson Award-nominated author known for her own contributions to the horror genre. Kaplan’s works include “It Will Just Be Us” and “When the Night Bells Ring.” Her short stories have appeared in various magazines and anthologies, and she has also published work as Joanna Parypinski.
Kaplan serves as co-chair of the Horror Writers Association’s Los Angeles chapter and teaches English and creative writing at Glendale Community College. She also plays cello in both the Symphony of the Verdugos and the band Guerra/paz.
The discussion would provide a platform for literary enthusiasts to engage with two accomplished authors in the genre.
Vroman’s Bookstore, a longstanding fixture in Pasadena’s literary scene, continues its tradition of hosting notable author events.
