Bagels and Bike Lanes: Pasadena Program Teaches City Cycling to Nervous Newcomers

Published on Jul 12, 2025

For many Pasadenans, the idea of navigating busy intersections on two wheels feels intimidating. A local cycling advocacy group aims to change that one bagel at a time.

The Pasadena Complete Streets Coalition is launching a “Beginner’s Bagel Ride” on July 13, combining practical urban cycling skills with a social breakfast ride through city streets—a deliberate effort to transform reluctant riders into confident daily cyclists.

“New to biking in the city? Thinking about using your bike for errands, commuting, or everyday trips—but not sure where to start?” the coalition asks in promotional materials for the event, which emphasizes a welcoming approach to urban cycling education.

The six-mile guided tour will teach essential skills including traffic navigation, cargo carrying techniques, and proper bike security methods. Organizers designed the program specifically for riders seeking to use bicycles as practical car replacements for everyday transportation needs.

Participants will meet at 9 a.m. at Caltech Lot 10, located at 314 South Michigan Avenue in Pasadena, at the southwest corner of Del Mar Boulevard and Michigan Avenue. The three-hour ride maintains a relaxed, conversational pace with a no-drop policy ensuring no participant gets left behind, though instructors will ensure no one creates safety hazards for themselves or the group.

The route covers mostly flat and gently sloping paved streets throughout Pasadena, returning to the starting location by approximately 11:30 a.m. The coalition will provide a free breakfast during a scheduled stop for bagels and coffee, which organizers describe as “our treat.”

Event materials describe the experience as “a rolling workshop—with bagels,” encouraging participants to “come for the bagels, stay for the skills—and leave with the confidence to start using your bike for more of your daily life.”

Instruction covers five core areas: traffic positioning and intersection navigation, cargo transport methods for groceries and work materials, family cycling setups for carrying children, proper bike locking techniques, and practical daily riding strategies including route selection and appropriate attire.“no Spandex needed,” the coalition notes, adding that while many participants find athletic wear comfortable for summer heat, some instructors ride in street clothes.

All bicycle types are welcome, though organizers recommend bikes that fit properly and note that road tires typically perform better than mountain bike tires on this route. Class 1, 2, and 3 e-bikes are permitted, but electric motorcycles and off-road-only e-bikes are prohibited. Participants must ensure their bikes are in good working condition before attending.

Children riding independently must demonstrate group riding experience, maintain an average speed of 12 miles per hour, and remain with parents at all times. Hand brakes are recommended over coaster brakes for young riders, and training wheels are not permitted. Younger children and pets are welcome when riding safely in trailers or on family cargo bikes.

The free event requires advance registration through Eventbrite. Attendance requires signing a liability waiver upon arrival. Helmets are mandatory for all participants. Organizers recommend bringing a working bike, helmet, water bottle, spare tubes, tire levers, a bike multi-tool, pump, and any questions about city riding. Participants with clipless pedals should ensure familiarity with their equipment before the ride.

The coalition encourages participants to bicycle to the event start location. Public transportation options include Metro Lake Station and Pasadena Transit Route 10 or Metro Route 267 to Del Mar Boulevard and Chester Avenue. Caltech provides free weekend parking in Lot 10 for those who drive.

Weather cancellations will be communicated via email by Saturday morning if conditions affect ride safety. The coalition notes that inclement weather cancels the event and advises participants to monitor their email for updates.
