What do you get when you combine storytelling, balloons, improv theater, and constant audience participation? According to the Altadena Library District, the answer is Annie Banannie’s “Balloon Storyteller Show: Making Stuff Up!”—a live, interactive performance where balloon artist Annie Banannie and her audience co-create original tales of excitement and daring.

Scheduled for Friday, June 27, from 1:00 to 1:45 p.m. in the Main Library’s Community Room, the program is free of charge and designed for children and families.

Using balloon props and costumes, Annie transforms the audience into collaborators, building stories on the spot with humor and spontaneity. The show is listed as part of the library’s summer events calendar and follows a free community lunch served at 11:30 a.m. that same day, organized through the Lunch at the Library initiative.

Annie Banannie, whose real name is Annie Caldwell, is a Southern California-based balloon artist and entertainer with more than 20 years of experience in balloon work. She has performed full-time for families for the past 17 years and has lived and worked in California since 2006. According to her instructor profile on Balloon Artist College, she specializes in using balloon storytelling as a dynamic, participatory performance art. In August 2008, she and her husband, Buster Balloon, were featured in Ripley’s Believe It or Not! for creating a full wedding dress out of balloons.

While the Bob Lucas Memorial Library is undergoing renovations, the Altadena Main Library continues to host programs that engage youth and families through creativity, community and play. Annie Banannie’s show reflects this commitment, inviting local children to be the stars of the story they help build—one balloon at a time.
